Celebrating Connections: National Recovery Month 2020

It’s National Recovery Month! And yes, that’s a reason to be excited.

Tackling a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is hard for anyone, and September provides an opportunity for us to recognize those who have been through treatment and recovery, and to give inspiration for those contemplating seeking help.

This quick article gives a few tips on how you can commemorate this year’s National Recovery Month.

Here’s What You Can Do

This year’s theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Celebrating Connections.” Together, we can bring awareness to the addiction problem in our communities, fight the stigma, and shine a light on the many options for treatment and recovery. Here are a few tangible ways you can act this September.

    • Reach out to someone you know – many of us have people in our lives who have gone through substance abuse treatment or are going through it currently. Take the time to congratulate them on their recovery with a quick text or phone call, or just to check in and see how they’re doing. A few words of encouragement can make a huge difference for someone suffering from a substance use disorder.
    • Look for National Recovery Month events in your area – there are thousands of Recovery Month events scheduled throughout the country. Click here to find some in your area. Don’t see one? Post one of your own!
    • Promote National Recovery Month – write a post about Recovery Month, or inform people you know. Share your testimony as a message of hope to other people with substance use disorders.

Tens of thousands of people die every year to addiction, and many more are experiencing substance use disorders but are afraid to seek help. There are options for recovery. Testimonies from those who have gone through treatment and come through stronger can give people the encouragement they need to take the first step toward their recovery.
