California, Florida, and Texas are among the states taking proactive measures to combat the opioid crisis by requiring doctors to consult a database before prescribing painkillers. These Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) help track and monitor prescription drug dispensing in order to prevent misuse, abuse, and diversion of opioids.
By mandating healthcare providers to check the database before writing a prescription, these states are aiming to reduce the overprescribing of opioids and prevent patients from doctor shopping or obtaining multiple prescriptions from different providers. This initiative is part of a larger effort to address the opioid epidemic and promote safer prescribing practices.
